Why I want to teach with technology

In Culinary, it is extremely important to try and incorporate technology into the classroom and for Culinary professors to introduce technology to their teaching styles. As an instructor in Culinary, I am always looking for new ways to heighten my student’s experience that goes beyond the hands-on learning that is done directly in the kitchen/classroom. Technology in my classroom should be a way for students to feel more connected to not only myself as their instructor, but also their classmates, and the world of Culinary. I want to give my students access to a variety of tools that will help test their knowledge of what they may already know, what they are learning, what they will learn, and how to apply that knowledge to their everyday lives in the Culinary world. These tools will range from (but not be limited to) simple online quizzes and tests, interactive videos, jamboards, recipe databases that they can use as reference, interactive games such as online crosswords, and technology-based points systems that will motivate students to complete their assigned tasks in the classroom as well as provide small rewards (such as choice of station or choice of a recipe that they would like to try) for obtaining a certain level of points. One day, I also want to explore the potential of offering a podcast to students so that there are more options than informational videos that I currently offer for the student on the go and to offer more accessibility. Technology is always advancing and with it, newer generations of students are more open and willing to try new technologies that are offered by their instructors. I want to adapt to these technologies and offer them to whomever is open to trying them while making sure that each of my students interacts with that technology so they can grow their education. As someone who was once a Culinary student, I often wished that there had been more options for students to learn, which weren’t just the hands-on experiences that the Culinary classroom is known for. I do not want my future students to feel as though they are not getting the most of their education due to the lack of technology. With different technologies being added into the Culinary world, I want to find different ways to provide extensive knowledge that I gained from my own schooling, and also my years of Culinary world experience to future Culinary Arts students.
